1. Take someone with you. It’s much more fun if you can taste with someone. Then you can try more and compare notes. Wine bars are a great place to take a date.
2. Before you sit, make sure it’s really a wine bar. Are there plenty of bottles everywhere, many of them open? Or just plenty of liquor and a few bottles of wine standing up with corks in them? (Some wine bars even have fancy systems that keep gas pumped into the bottles to preserve them, a good sign that this is the real deal.)
3. Sit at the bar instead of at a table if you can and if you’re just there for the wine. This will be more fun if you can schmooze with the bartender. If you want to eat something, some bars have special bar-food menus with small bites of this and that.
