Reaper Team sped across the desert to face down Typhoon.

A mountain loomed over them with a cavernous entrance carved out from its side. Selena stopped the enforcer just outside.

The enforcer’s hatch dropped and Reaper Team rushed out. They took up the formation they planned on earlier. Duncan at the lead with the Reclaimers behind him. Townsend and Jensen brought up the flanks while Bridges watched the rear.

This time Selena and Bowman came along for the ride. Even Chief.

“Remind me again why you three are coming?” Alexander asked them.

“Because we owe this bastard for wrecking our last enforcer,” Selena answered.

Chief quietly barked in agreement. At least that’s what Gabriel figured. He didn’t speak wolf.

“Interesting. It was not the PAC who chased you down?” Alexander asked.

“Nope,” Bowman answered. “They kept trying to come through the front door, but nothing quite says get off my property like an autocannon shell through your point man.”

“The PAC stopped coming after a while,” Selena said. “Somewhere around the time you guys linked up with Sam. That’s when Typhoon showed up and started shooting up the place.”

“Why didn’t he just kill you?” Nicole asked.

“Rude,” Bowman said.

“It’s a fair question,” Nicole countered.

Selena shrugged. “He wasn’t exactly in a talking mood.”

Gabriel scanned their surroundings for any traps, and there were, just not for infantry. There were landmines hidden beneath sand and debris, the kind designed to take out armored vehicles. Their armor wasn’t heavy enough to set them off but the sheer number was concerning regardless. “He was using them as bait. Typhoon wanted to draw me out.”

Alexander and Gabriel went to work defusing the mines with a little bit of supervision from Nicole. She was great at helping them not blow themselves up.

“Well why didn’t he just hit us when we were dealing with the PAC?” Sarah asked. “We weren’t exactly hiding up there.”

“Maybe he was trying to play along to Deadman’s rules and take me out himself?” Gabriel wasn’t sure either.

“Perhaps it was simple calculus, Rivera,” Alexander offered. “All of us have limits as to how far we can push ourselves. “Typhoon must have known that between our fireteam and Sam’s forces, he would have been overwhelmed.”

“Maybe,” Gabriel admitted. “We’ll find out real quick if that’s the case.”

The chatter died down as they traveled in what must have been a mile-long tunnel into the depths of the mountain. A pair of blown open bunker doors greeted Reaper Team. It was just wide enough to let Duncan squeeze through with Alexander and Gabriel at his side. If the enforcer could have even survived the mine-filled tunnel, it would have never fit through the doors. Good thing we left it behind, Gabriel mused, even if they had diffused much of the minefield.

Gabriel activated his flashlight and pierced the facility’s darkness. Thick dust and sand floated across the abandoned garage. Several decades old trucks lay scattered here and there as they advanced deeper inside. The place was a silent crypt without a sound beyond their own movements.

“I was expecting a lot more boom right about now,” Bowman said.
