CHAPTER 19

“That’s where they found him,” Iscia said and pointed to a large square hole in the floor in front of them.

“So, what happened to him?” William asked.

“Someone shot him with some kind of ray,” Iscia said. “It was meant to kill him, but he survived – although he was left fused into the metal floor. They had to cut out a block and move him to a laboratory, where they’re still trying to free him.”

“Why didn’t you tell me this before?” William asked.

“It’s supposed to be top secret,” she said. “I’m telling you now though – that must count for something?”

William nodded, feeling guilty that he hadn’t told Iscia about the woman with the mechanical hand. Could she be responsible for this? He walked over to the edge and looked into the hole.

“Do you know who did it?” he asked.

Iscia was about to answer when William turned and saw Freddy coming towards them. Iscia moved to stand beside William.

“Exciting, isn’t it? All these fantastic objects.” Freddy threw out his arms like a king showing someone his kingdom. “It doesn’t surprise me that you’re here. You must find this place really interesting.”

William didn’t say anything. He still didn’t understand why Freddy was acting so friendly. It was a big change of character since the last time William had been at the Institute.

Freddy looked at Iscia. “So, have you shown him the orb yet?”

“What orb?” She looked puzzled.

“Didn’t you know?” Freddy walked in between two large shelves. “Come on, William loves orbs – I’ll show him!”

William looked at Iscia.

“We should leave,” she said.

William felt a faint tingling in his stomach. It grew in strength and the vibrations started travelling up his spine. It was like an invisible force was pulling him forward, and he had no other choice than to start walking. Was he having another attack? He tried not to panic.

“Where are you going?” he heard Iscia say from behind him.

“I don’t know,” he said. “Something’s happening.”

He followed the direction that Freddy had gone in, and stopped when he got to the other end of the room. It was darker here. In front of him were even more rows of old glass cabinets, but some of them were covered with dusty cotton tarpaulins.

“This is the old stuff,” Iscia said.

“I thought everything down here was old?” William said, trying to control the vibrations in the pit of his stomach.

“This stuff is so old it’s undatable,” she said. “I don’t even know what’s down here.”

William continued. His eyes had adapted to the gloom and he spotted Freddy standing by an old cabinet – it was twice William’s height, about two metres wide and partially covered with a grey tarpaulin. Freddy raised his hand, grabbed hold of the sheet and pulled it off.

“Freddy, I really don’t think you should…” Iscia started.

Whatever was inside the cabinet was having a strong effect on William. He felt a force pulling him closer. It had to be some kind of code. William could make out the contours of a round object, about the size of a basketball.
