Hundreds of species of birds, from hawks to hummingbirds, engage in yearly migrations, some covering thousands of miles. A common migration pattern among birds is nesting during the summer in the north and wintering at warmer locations in the south.

Irruptions of birds during a tough winter create rare opportunities to photograph species not typically found in one’s area. However, it’s imperative to understand that these events arise due to unusual wintering conditions that create stress for birds. The arrival of a northern species such as a snowy owl might create quite a buzz among local bird-watchers and photographers. Dozens of people attempting to view or photograph the visitor may push it from perch to perch or disrupt its hunting if they get too close. Take your pictures from a distance. If the bird flushes due to your presence, back off. Unnecessary activity further stresses an already disrupted creature. Its survival is more important than acquiring its photograph.
