Damon set another log on the old tree stump and looked up at the heavy, dark clouds. It was still morning, but it looked like late evening. Kyn said there was a hell of a snowstorm headed their way, and Damon awaited it with a mixture of dread and excitement. A snowstorm was a completely different thing than the warm, gentle, rain showers he was used to.

The pressure in the air made it feel as if the whole world were holding its breath, waiting for something. It gave him chills.

The sound of the ax splitting a log in half broke into his thoughts, and he hurried to set up another log. Kyn was trying to split enough wood to keep them warm for the two or three days the storm was expected to last.

Damon had been happy to get out of the close quarters of the cabin for a bit. Ever since he’d accidentally healed Luka’s ankle yesterday, Luka had been quiet, and Damon had been more aware of him than ever.

He’d talked to Jaana on the phone last night, and she hadn’t been nearly as upset about his discovery that he already knew some things about healing as he had. She’d told him that whatever skills he’d had before his memory loss were still there, waiting to be rediscovered. She said it was a positive sign, but Damon wished it had never happened. It had frightened Luka, and Damon feared that whatever small progress they might have made had been wiped out by his instinctive reaction to Luka’s pain.

It didn’t matter how firmly he told himself it was hopeless, Damon couldn’t get Luka out of his head. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Luka dancing. The way Luka had moved his body was so sensuous and graceful. Even though Luka had been fully clothed, and had done nothing really provocative, the memory of that dance was enough to make Damon’s blood burn.

And his face… God, that sweet face. Luka had been completely lost in the music, eyes closed, lips slightly parted as his body swayed to the beat. He was beautiful. Just looking at him made Damon ache in so many ways. Hell, he’d jerked off to the images burned in his brain twice last night while he imagined holding Luka and touching him, exploring every inch of his body with mouth and hands…

“Damon!”

His cheeks burned and he was glad of the long winter coat he was wearing. It hid the fact that his jeans were suddenly far too tight in all the most uncomfortable places.

When he looked up, Kyn was leaning on the ax, waiting for him. “You were a long way away.”

“Sorry. I was… I mean…” Damon reached for another log and set it on the stump, then bent to pick up the split logs that were lying on the ground around it.

Kyn split the log and then stepped back to look at him. “Still worrying about yesterday?”

Damon set up another log. “I’m okay.
