Chapter Seventeen

-Violet-

I smooth my hand down the satin dress my new friends, Maggie and Sheila, rented at the Downtown Tux & Gown Rentals. I had hastily put it on in the dressing room in Vegas Weddings where Donna and Bev scheduled my elopement to Kemp while we obtained our marriage license across the street for the ceremony.

The ceremony happening any minute.

My stomach flips and head swims. I swallow down the nerves and look at the women helping with the finishing touches.

Did they agree to help for their fifteen-seconds of fame or because they truly are excited? I’m going to go with the latter to help ease my nerves and conscience over this rash decision, especially since they remind me of my grandma and her group of friends that are always up to something. I’m thankful they’ll be a part of this memory. Their kindheartedness and enthusiasm are just what I need to keep me from bolting out the back door.

“See, Sheila, I told you this dress would be gorgeous on her.” Maggie crosses her arms and raises an eyebrow at Sheila.

“You were right. I’ll never underestimate your fashion sense again.” Sheila rolls her eyes as she pulls a curl over my shoulder. “I’ll never hear the end of it, dearie. For the rest of our days, she’ll drone on and on about how she single-handedly got you married.”

“Why, I never—” Maggie sputters, her mouth dropping wide in disbelief.

“Now, Sheila. She won’t brag for the rest of our lives.” Donna bumps Sheila’s shoulder. “It’ll just be two or three years.”

“Maybe closer to five,” Bev adds. “This is quite exciting.”

“I don’t know why I put up with you three.” Maggie scowls.

“Because you love us, that’s why.” Bev pulls Maggie into a side hug while she handles the camera Bo pushed on her.

I keep forgetting all of this is being recorded and possibly broadcasted to the world. Ducking my head, I try not to think about my parents watching. I can picture the vein popping out on Dad’s forehead right now.

“Yeah, well, that might change,” Maggie grumbles, and I cover my giggle with my hand.

This is how I picture me, Sadie, Denali, and Rory when we’re older. At least, this is how I hope we’ll be. I want to be getting on each other’s nerves, but still thick as thieves.

“Thank you so much for helping me. This dress is incredible, and we definitely couldn’t have gotten the ceremony scheduled this quick without you. You’re like my very own fairy godmothers!”

Seriously, it’s been less than an hour since Kemp said he’d marry me.

My toes tingle at the memory of his yes. He hadn’t seemed to be pretending. Try as I might, I can’t keep my hopes reined in. The memory of this day has the potential to be one that brings me great joy or pain for the rest of my life. Both will be hard to keep in the depths with the other memories.

“No, love, thank you for letting a bunch of meddling old women be a part of your special day.
