Chapter Seventeen
-Violet-
I smooth my hand down the satin dress my new friends, Maggie and Sheila, rented at the Downtown Tux & Gown Rentals. I had hastily put it on in the dressing room in Vegas Weddings where Donna and Bev scheduled my elopement to Kemp while we obtained our marriage license across the street for the ceremony.
The ceremony happening any minute.
My stomach flips and head swims. I swallow down the nerves and look at the women helping with the finishing touches.
Did they agree to help for their fifteen-seconds of fame or because they truly are excited? Iâm going to go with the latter to help ease my nerves and conscience over this rash decision, especially since they remind me of my grandma and her group of friends that are always up to something. Iâm thankful theyâll be a part of this memory. Their kindheartedness and enthusiasm are just what I need to keep me from bolting out the back door.
âSee, Sheila, I told you this dress would be gorgeous on her.â Maggie crosses her arms and raises an eyebrow at Sheila.
âYou were right. Iâll never underestimate your fashion sense again.â Sheila rolls her eyes as she pulls a curl over my shoulder. âIâll never hear the end of it, dearie. For the rest of our days, sheâll drone on and on about how she single-handedly got you married.â
âWhy, I neverââ Maggie sputters, her mouth dropping wide in disbelief.
âNow, Sheila. She wonât brag for the rest of our lives.â Donna bumps Sheilaâs shoulder. âItâll just be two or three years.â
âMaybe closer to five,â Bev adds. âThis is quite exciting.â
âI donât know why I put up with you three.â Maggie scowls.
âBecause you love us, thatâs why.â Bev pulls Maggie into a side hug while she handles the camera Bo pushed on her.
I keep forgetting all of this is being recorded and possibly broadcasted to the world. Ducking my head, I try not to think about my parents watching. I can picture the vein popping out on Dadâs forehead right now.
âYeah, well, that might change,â Maggie grumbles, and I cover my giggle with my hand.
This is how I picture me, Sadie, Denali, and Rory when weâre older. At least, this is how I hope weâll be. I want to be getting on each otherâs nerves, but still thick as thieves.
âThank you so much for helping me. This dress is incredible, and we definitely couldnât have gotten the ceremony scheduled this quick without you. Youâre like my very own fairy godmothers!â
Seriously, itâs been less than an hour since Kemp said heâd marry me.
My toes tingle at the memory of his yes. He hadnât seemed to be pretending. Try as I might, I canât keep my hopes reined in. The memory of this day has the potential to be one that brings me great joy or pain for the rest of my life. Both will be hard to keep in the depths with the other memories.
âNo, love, thank you for letting a bunch of meddling old women be a part of your special day.
