Chapter Twenty

-Dax-

Soft, warm fingers wrap around my palm. I open my eyes, surprised to still find Rory’s hand in mine. The fact that she let me take it at all had me lying awake most of the night, convincing myself it didn’t mean anything.

She was scared, and I was here.

That’s it.

But watching her flinch in her sleep each time the thunder crashed and seeing her relax with just a stroke of my thumb across the back of her hand had me wide awake. Well, that and the fact that a man measuring almost six-six isn’t meant to sleep in a driver’s seat. I roll my cramped neck and ease my hand from Rory’s.

If I don’t get out of here, my back will permanently be crooked. And I’ll probably lean over and kiss Rory awake. Neither would be good … well, good for my future.

Slowly, so I don’t wake her, I pull the handle and open the door. I need to get breakfast cooking, so we can climb some rocks and go home. Overnighting’s a mistake I won’t make again on these little adventures of hers. There are a ton of experiences I can give her that won’t end up with her sleeping next to me, tempting me.

I pull the tarp off the camp stove and find the sausage in the cooler. It’s sizzling and filling the crisp morning air with its spices when Rory finally climbs out of the truck. When my eyes instantly snap to her, I groan and clench my teeth to keep my mouth from gaping.

She’s found my spare sweatshirt in the back seat and swims in it. Her hair’s messy, completely opposite of its normal, perfect style. She shivers, then yawns, covering her mouth with her hand engulfed in my sleeve.

Forget tempting.

She’s downright bewitching.

Casting her captivating spells to lure me into my doom.

“I hope you don’t mind.” She pulls at the front of the sweatshirt. “I forgot to grab my jacket last night.”

“It’s fine.”

Just peachy.

I’ll have to burn it so I don’t obsess over her lingering presence. Turn the stupid shirt into a security blanket or something. Darn shame. I liked that shirt.

I clear my throat and turn back to the food. “Breakfast’ll be done in ten. I’d like to break camp so we can head out as soon as we finish climbing.”

“Oh. Okay.” Her soft answer laced with disappointment drags my gaze to her.

She’s fiddling with the cuff, staring at it like it holds the secrets to life. Her cheeks pink. Probably just the chilly morning air. Then her ears redden, and my heart races in my chest. Rory’s blushing … because of me?

Did she feel the electricity coursing through the truck last night too? It wasn’t the lightning. No, it was an entrancing connection zinging between us. I’m sure.

“Thanks for understanding last night and not laughing.” She swallows and looks up at me. “I didn’t think I’d react so strongly to the storm.”

The zing fizzles to a lump of dejection in my gut. Of course, she’s embarrassed by her freak out.
