Chapter Nineteen

“If you crash, we don’t do Eve any favors.”

Dawn didn’t think Linus had heard her. After a minute, he eased off the accelerator.

He had passed a string of robot trucks, even taking a blind corner around two and needing to swerve onto the gravelly soft shoulder to avoid an oncoming tractor.

They were nearing the Salina Crossroads downtown.

Linus studied the street ahead. “Sheriff station is on the next block. Tell me you have a signal.”

She blinked to refresh up the app. If the sheriff or the corporate thugs were being careful, her drone’s transmitter would be detected. They’d be walking into a trap. But no signal would mean Linus was right. Dawn had wasted too much time and Eve was gone.

Nothing yet.

Linus slowed the car. “Talk to me. We heading the right direction?”

Dawn raised her device. It synched with her implants and boosted the range.

Not a blip.

“Tell me you have something.”

They coasted past the sheriff’s station. A department motorbike stood out front, but no cruisers.

Dawn turned in her seat and tried to will the sensor to find the signal. “Pull around back.”

“That won’t make a difference. We need to widen our search if she’s not here.”

“Do what I tell you, Linus. Go around back or I’m jumping out.”

The back of the station had a small lot and a lower level. Ping. Faint signal. Did the building have a basement? Enough earth and enough steel could obscure the drone’s transmission.

The police cruiser with the raised suspension was parked at a fire exit behind a utility box.

“Probably at least two cops in there,” Dawn said. “Three, if their receptionist is in. Let me prep an ID. I can send a drone in upstairs and get a layout. Then we—wait!”

Linus stopped the car behind the cruiser and got out. A camera stared directly at them. He produced an electric lock pick and popped the door open in seconds. Dawn hurried to follow.

No alarm sounded. That didn’t mean their presence wasn’t flagged by the security system or anyone monitoring the station.

The signal was just up ahead. Deputy Sanjay was halfway in a closet. Brooms, mops, an assortment of boxes, and more junk lay spread out around him. He wrangled with a collapsed wheelchair, trying to stuff it in amongst the clutter inside.

Linus pulled his weapon. Dawn patted his arm and slipped past him. When the deputy turned, she pointed her dart gun at his face. He instantly shrank. “Don’t! Whatever you want...just don’t!”

A quick search found no weapon on him.

“You’re looking for your partner! She’s in a cell down in the basement!”

Dawn relieved him of his keys. “Who else is here?”

“No one. Receptionist is sick today.”

“Where’s the sheriff?”

“On patrol. Looking for you guys.”

Linus pulled him from the closet and slammed him against a wall. “And who does the sheriff think we are?”

“Corporate mercenaries. Aren’t you?”

“Bring him,” Dawn said. “Let’s get Eve. We’ll continue this discussion downstairs.”
