Later that night, Lily woke up in the dreamscape and ran to meet Felix and Serena at the park entrance. They looked like they needed to hear some good news, so she told them about Ace first.

‘Thank goodness you found him,’ said Serena. ‘We spent hours searching the Internet again today, but we couldn’t track him down anywhere.’

Felix rubbed his chin. ‘It must be a secret chat room that only the players know about.’

‘Alfie told me about it,’ said Lily, ‘although he took some persuading.’ Her burning eyes flared in the red moonlight. ‘It looks really hard. I watched him play for a bit. You should’ve seen those flying wolves. They were so fast.’

‘Oh, don’t say that,’ said Serena. ‘It’s bad enough already.’

‘We’ve got no choice,’ said Felix. ‘We have to try, and at least we know what to do now. If it’s really hard then hopefully it’ll be a while before the players get past the wolves. It’ll give us more time to find out about the next predator.’

‘I also found out why everyone’s addicted to the game,’ said Lily. ‘There’s a bit where it hypnotizes the players. Alfie went into a trance and didn’t even know it was happening.’

Serena’s nostrils flared as she tossed back her long hair. ‘What? That’s terrible! Why would someone do that? Why would someone want to make people have nightmares and create the Colony dreamons?’

‘I don’t know,’ said Lily. ‘But we’re obviously immune. The hypnotic part didn’t work on me.’

‘So we’re definitely in the dreamscape because of Colony,’ said Felix. ‘We need to find that crystal pyramid. We obviously won’t be able to destroy Hepta’s dreamon without it. We already thought our mindfire wouldn’t work on him anyway.’

Lily quickly told the twins about Hepta possessing Alfie. ‘It was the same voice as Hepta in the cave… same voice we keep hearing on the wind. He’s obviously trying to scare us away.’

‘Well, he’s not going to scare me away so easily,’ said Felix loudly. ‘If he wants to get rid of me, then he’ll have to come and fight instead of hiding in that cave.’

‘Shhh!’ said Serena. ‘We’re not ready to face him yet.’

‘Why’s he hiding in there anyway?’ said Lily.

‘I don’t know, but I’ve been thinking about it,’ said Felix. ‘I think Hepta’s dreamon is the key to all of this. He’s the one we need to destroy. On the Colony website, Hepta says he’s the last predator, so the game must end when he’s destroyed. Maybe it’s the same here in the dreamscape.’

‘Oh, I get it,’ said Serena. ‘We have to play and win the game here, fighting real dreamons instead of predators on a computer screen. If we destroy Hepta’s dreamon, it would be game over and all the other Colony dreamons would disappear. Ben and Alfie would stop being possessed and go back to normal.’ She clasped Lily’s hand inside both of hers. ‘Lily, what do you think? Felix has to be right. He’s always right.’

‘Could be,’ said Lily. ‘We could skip to the end of the game by getting rid of Hepta’s dreamon.
