Chapter Seventeen
THE DOORS OF THE REMOVAL van slammed shut. Young Jules hadnât met Karl yetâand wouldnât until Shirley introduced us. Talkative Shirley had met Karl first, and couldnât wait to find me and tell me about âthe boy who looks like David Van-Dayâ. She knew I had a crush on the lead singer from Dollar.
Thatâs how Karl and I met: in a giggling frenzy between Shirley and me as she introduced us. Karl had looked on, amused. He hadnât seemed to mind, and after that initial shyness, he fitted into our friendship as though heâd always been there.
But although Shirley was no longer here to break us up, neither was she here to bring us together in the first place.
I reminded myself that I wasnât here for myself; instead I was here to stop Mum from slipping back into the depression that plagued her in both of my changing timelines.
âDonât be silly.â A voice caused me to break out of my daydream. I glanced over my shoulder and recognised Karl walking towards the bungalow with a woman whom I knew as his mother, Tina. They were carrying Co-op shopping bags. âYouâll make new friends.â
âThereâs nothing here. Itâs dead.â
âWe had to move because of your dadâs job. Letâs not start this again. He feels guilty enough as it is.â
My heart had skipped a beat at the sight of Karl. He looked so young. His mop of blond hair wasnât reminiscent of David Van-Day as I remembered, but rather as my mum saw it: Worzel Gummidge.
I hurried on. I was here for things far more important, I reminded myself. For once, I had to concentrate on my mum. She needed me.
âAye up,â said a well-known voice behind me, but it wasnât directed at me. âWelcome to the village.â
I turned as a Ford Cortina came to a standstill alongside Karl and his mum.
They exchanged a few pleasantries and then Gerald eased the car forward, but not for long. He spotted me and stopped.
âWant a lift, Mrs B?â he asked.
I felt a rush of affection. My angry memories of him had gone, and in their place was a genuine fondness. For a moment I couldnât speak, and climbed into the car without saying anything.
âCan you turn left at the top of the road?â I said.
âLeft? You not going to the Talbot?â
âNo. Turn left, and then right towards Deanshanger. I... I need to talk to you.â
Frowning, Gerald did as I asked, and finally pulled into a layby. We were surrounded by fields, trees, and little else. Gerald laughed nervously, saying, âThis could get us into loads of trouble, Mrs B.â
I looked for the button to buzz the window down, until I realised I needed to turn the handle. Gerald did the same.
âWhatâs this about, pet?â he asked.
I took a deep breath, then, âYesterday I was Iris, and I was going through paperwork with you. Obviously, you managed it yourself because my memories are changing. Your mum no longer dislikes me or my mum. And I donât feel any antagonism for you anymore.
