The spiritual father of Brazilian jiujitsu, Hélio Gracie, grew up an invalid in Rio de Janeiro, the youngest and frailest of five brothers. As a child he would faint after running up a flight of stairs. While his brothers trained and taught Japanese jiujitsu, Hélio, under doctor’s orders, would sit and watch. When he finally started training at age sixteen, Hélio began adapting what he’d seen to accommodate his physical limitations and weaknesses, coming up with a new martial art that emphasized leverage and timing over strength and speed. By its nature Brazilian jiujitsu was a martial art designed for the physically vulnerable, and its entire aim was to capitalize on the vulnerability of others.
