There is no better source I’ve found for details about Taiwanese marriage customs than Bonnie Adrian’s delightful book Framing the Bride: Globalizing Beauty and Romance in Taiwan’s Bridal Industry. Much of the material in this chapter is drawn from this first-rate study. Statistics on the prevalence of arranged marriages come from “From Arranged Marriage toward Love Match” by Thornton, Chang, and Lin, in the book Social Change and the Family in Taiwan. Information on residential patterns comes from another chapter in that volume, “Co-Residence and Other Ties Linking Couples and Their Parents,” by Weinstein, Sun, Chang, and Freedman. I have read many wonderful books and articles on Taiwanese religion, but my main source for this chapter is David K. Jordan’s Gods, Ghosts and Ancestors, a truly good read.
