We stepped out of the office building into the brisk fall air. Feeling uneasy about our conversation with Jay, I almost didn't notice two men approaching us from the right. The same men, Fat Joe and Four-finger Pete, who had approached us at the airport. I stopped, as did Hirsch. The larger of the two men, Fat Joe, said, "Hey, what a coincidence. I'm surprised to see yous two still here."

"Is that right?" Hirsch asked.

"Yes, I thought maybe yous be going home by now."

Fists on hips, I stepped toward them. "Why would we do that?"

Fat Joe said, "No need to get upset. It's just that New York's not really a place for the likes of the two of yous."

"And why is that?" Hirsch asked.

The shorter man, who stood around five feet five inches tall, said. "Just thinking maybe it's not safe for some California softies like yous."

"Is that a threat?" Hirsch asked.

Before the small Italian man could respond, footsteps hurried on the pavement behind us. I glanced over my shoulder and saw it was Special Agents Brosco and Costanza. Brosco stared the two mobsters down before she said, "Hey, Joe. Hey, Pete. How's it going?"

Fat Joe said, "It's going pretty good. Thanks for askin'."

Brosco got up in Joe's face. "Oh, really? From where I'm standing, it looks like you're harassing some of our out-of-town guests?"

Four-finger Pete shook his head. "No. No. Yous got it all wrong. We're just out taking a stroll, Special Agent Brosco."

"Really? Because Detective Hirsch and Ms. Monroe here said they also ran into you at the airport. What are the odds of that?" SA Costanza asked.

"Life's full of coincidences. Don't you think, Special Agent?" Pete asked.

While SA Brosco had Fat Joe cornered, SA Costanza got closer to Pete. "No, I don't. I think it would be best if the two of you leave Detective Hirsch and Ms. Monroe alone. Don't you think?"

Brosco gave Joe some space, and he said, "We didn't mean nothing by it. Just seeing how they're getting along. A little birdie told us they're looking for Blue Jay's old squeeze, Anastasia. We're just trying to help."

"Are these two friends of yours?" I asked Brosco and Costanza.

Brosco smirked. "This here is Joe and Pete. They are associates of Jay Castellano's father."

"Yeah, we're in the construction business," Fat Joe said.

Brosco gave us a look as if to say the two were mobsters and obviously did little to hide it. They were a couple of stereotypes. It was as if they’d walked straight out of a movie. Yous this and yous that. I’d thought the funky speech was fake and emphasized for Hollywood. I hadn't realized that was how they actually talked.

Hirsch said, "Brosco, these guys just said we aren't safe here in New York. It sounded a lot like a threat."

"Is that right, gentlemen?" Brosco said as she once again stepped closer to the two men.

Joe shrugged. "We were just saying it's cold here. It's no sunny California."

"How did you know Detective Hirsch and Ms. Monroe are from sunny California?" Brosco asked.
