Did You Know . . . Only the female mosquito bites. She needs the protein in your blood to develop her eggs.

In a beautiful set of experiments, Caltech researchers showed that once a mosquito detects carbon dioxide, she then pays attention to visual features in her environment. To prove this, researchers had female mosquitoes fly freely in a wind tunnel that was visually plain except for a single dark square on the floor at the end (mosquitoes’ visual systems are more sensitive to dark than light). In the presence of normal air, mosquitoes paid no attention to the floor at all, but when the experimenters introduced carbon dioxide into the tunnel, the mosquitoes immediately began to inspect the dark square on the floor, spending hours hovering about an inch above it. They had switched over from gas detection to vision, trying to home in on a potential target.
