KEY POINTS: Chapter 6

• Advise your children to use their instincts to determine if the teasing is serious.

• Advise your children not to talk to a bully if there’s a chance it would place them in physical or psychological danger.

• If your children decide to talk to a bully, suggest that they use as few words as possible and speak clearly and firmly.

• Discuss ways of predicting things about the bully’s behavior to help your children come up with a good solution to the problem.

• Practice using facial expressions and body language to boost words.

• Remind your children to keep the bully guessing.

• Advise your children to give the appearance of strength and mental toughness without seeming aggressive and combative.

• If your children sense an immediate danger or if verbal replies and facial and body language don’t work, they should inform the school authorities.

• Coming back at the bully with a joke is something your children may want to try if the bullying is sporadic or seems like a one-time occurrence.

• Tell your children to be aware of a bully’s particular ways of operating, patterns of daily activity, and places he or she frequents on a regular basis.
