A stiff blow to the kidney — the only one I’ve got — turns my legs to jelly.

Rumi winces.

Indifferent Bastard waits for me to catch my breath. “You’re a Loyalist, yes?”

On my knees, I shake my head, my lips dry and salty. “Loyalists don’t carry Colt 1911s. But you already knew that. Same way you know that only Humayun supplies 1911s in Pakistan.”

Indifferent Bastard displays emotion: the slightest twitch in his chin. “What are you implying?”

“That I work for Humayun. And if I work for him, then that means I work for the army.”

“Nonsense.”

“Makes you think, doesn’t it, boys?”

“This is ridiculous.”

“You.” I turn to Nervous Bastard, who’s been looking out the window this whole time. “Seen any military jeeps patrolling the area?”

They all turn to him. Nervous Bastard doesn’t look at them.

“Rumi?” I turn to the boy. “The radio still silent?”

He nods reluctantly.

I laugh. “This is a fall, boys. Humayun set me up the same way Evergreen set you up.”

18-Wheeler digs the rifle into my cheek. “We should just kill him, sir.”

“I agree,” Nervous Bastard intones.

Rotund Bastard and Dumb Bastard seem hesitant.

Indifferent Bastard doesn’t twitch.

Prodding your brain, aren’t I?

“Come on.” 18-Wheeler jabs the .303 deeper in my face. “Why would Colonel Evergreen do that to us? And for whom? Humayun?”
