Fourteen

Norah paced in her room at Grays Court, trying not to think about what was happening to Eli. Her heart ached as she recalled the fear and pleading in his eyes as the Scot held him captive. But here she was, doing nothing, depending totally on Barclay’s determination and strength to recover him. Her thoughts migrated all too easily from her pupil’s state to her employer’s.

When he left he had that steely look on his face that always gave her shivers. His only clue to the boy’s location was his own intuition about her uncle and what he’d learned from the solicitor he had consulted earlier that day. He wasn’t forthcoming about what the man said, but it was enough to make him think Edgar Capshaw was capable of something as wicked as abducting a child.

Harshly worded letters, her uncle’s local repute, and a mysterious flake of gold had led him to bet everything on that possibility. She prayed that his instincts and headstrong actions would be as productive as they had been since he first rescued her.

Stubborn man.

Well, she was discovering she had gumption of her own. She had heard part of his conversation with the tall, lean fellow he’d hired as his valet and knew they would be watching her uncle’s house for the Scot’s appearance. He insisted she remain at Grays and out of danger, but she knew what her pursuer’s minions looked like. What if one of them came to her uncle instead of the Scot himself?

The memory of Eli’s frantic face haunted her. She couldn’t just sit and wait; she had to do something. She paced for a few moments, then found herself standing before the wardrobe. She took a deep breath. What concealing clothes did she have?

A short while later, dressed in her dark blue woolen dress and carrying her cloak, she descended to the main reception desk to have the innkeeper send to a livery for a saddled horse . . . only to find there were two already waiting in the front court. The innkeeper informed her that the mounts had been ordered by her employer, who said he would return for them that evening. She smiled, informed the innkeeper that one was meant for her, and chose the smaller of the two.

She hiked her skirts and mounted with an ease that surprised her. She had been required to take lessons once upon a time, never guessing in what dire circumstance such an accomplishment might prove helpful. Resettling her skirts, she adjusted the reins with a faint smile and headed for the gate.

Murielle came running out of Grays main doors as she turned the horse toward the road. “Miz . . . please, miz . . . come back . . . wait!”

But Norah ducked her head beneath the branches just outside the gate and kept going. Fortunately, she had been so focused on meeting her uncle that she had fixed every twist and turn of the way to his house in her mind.
