The Boyfriend

Later at the police station, Heather was trying not to pace. She felt like she wanted to take action, but she needed to wait to see if the potential boyfriend could be tracked down by his tattoo. Amy seemed content to enjoy the White Chocolate Peanut Butter Donuts with Chief Chet who was making small talk about the case and Nicolas’s visit. However, Heather was finding it hard to focus. She was thinking about all the questions she wanted to ask the boyfriend and about how she wanted the interrogation to go quickly so she would still have a chance to meet up with Jamie and help him find the perfect engagement ring.

“I’m glad I have such good detectives and private investigators willing to assist them,” said Chief Chet. “It makes my job easier. And it already seems like you’ve accomplished a lot. This morning you didn’t have any idea who the victim was. Now you’ve identified her and found some suspects.”

“I’m glad Laverne Niles confirmed that the victim was Scarlet,” said Amy. “I’d have thought I was going crazy if she’d said otherwise.”

“And I’m sure that the APB that was put out about that car will yield fruit,” said Chief Chet. “Someone is sure to have seen it. And where it’s found might help solve the case too. You did good work learning about the missing car and about a way to find the boyfriend.”

“We just need to hope that he got his tattoo here on the island,” said Amy. “If so, I’m sure the tattoo artists will talk to Ryan and Peters. If it was somewhere else, then we’ll have our work cut out for us tracking him down.”

“We might have our work cut out for us too,” said Heather. “If all the Soda Sisters were lying about where they really were the night that Scarlet was murdered, then we’ll need to figure out why, and if one of them is guilty.”

“I’m hoping the boyfriend did it so we won’t have to sort all that out,” Amy joked.

“Come and have a seat and enjoy one of your fantastic donuts,” Chief Chet suggested to Heather. “You seem even more tense than usual. Is there something about this case that makes it close to home?”

“No,” Heather said, realizing she must be distracted about Jamie’s upcoming proposal. “It’s my usual dislike about murderers being on the loose.”

“Could this also be about Nicolas returning to Texas?” asked the chief. “I know my daughter Chelsea is disappointed that he’ll be leaving. I bet Lilly is too.”

“She is,” Heather admitted. “But she is always glad when he comes back to visit. He should be here for the holidays.”

“I know Chelsea was starting to say that he really needs to get adopted and it’s a shame that someone on the island can’t bring him into their home here,” said Chief Chet as he ate his donut. “I know what she was hinting at. But I don’t think we could adopt him. Much as we would like to.
