Edward immediately entered the room from a door behind me that I had not even noticed. He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me close to him, making my skin crawl. I resisted him instantly. But Edward pulled me tighter to him. I thought about punching him in the gut. But I didn’t know if Jonathan and Aaron were still aboard. With a wave of his hand, he could punish them for my actions. I kept my tightened fists by my side.

“That went very well. I learned everything I needed to know, and none of your friends died, which means everything went according to plan,” Edward stated. My jaw tightened in anger. He eavesdropped on my conversations. My moments alone weren’t truly alone. Why am I even surprised?

“Carter, it seems that you and your mother share a problem, from what I overheard. But I have a hunch that you already broke the news to that Aaron boy. He is broken-hearted, sad, depressed, and angry. He keeps trying because maybe you will open your eyes to the truth. And somewhere deep inside you, it’s working. He is stealing your heart in pieces because the last time he tried to steal it all at once and he failed. Slowly but surely, he thinks he will re-win your heart. And you know something; I think his plan just might work. Of course, that would be if you hadn’t forced him to leave you here.” Those final words of his stung more than any other because they were the truth. My arm almost whipped around to punch his face, but I – miraculously – kept myself still. I reminded myself he was probably trying to get a reaction from me and gain an excuse to hurt me or my crew. I wouldn’t – I couldn’t – give him one.

But the stillness forced me to dwell on his words. Was it possible that Aaron could win me back when there was already such a strong bond between Jonathan and me? I was no longer being forced to choose, since I had already chosen Jonathan, but were they being forced to fight? Was I forcing them to fight?

“Carter, you are going to speak if I tell you. If I, or anyone else for that matter, command you to speak, you must do so. Do you understand?” he said, grabbing my jaw and pulling my face close to his, jerking me away from the mess in my mind. I nodded as my response. He let go and grabbed my arm. Then I turned towards Edward in a face of defiance, surprising him.

“I will never marry your son,” I stated plainly. Edward was taken back, unprepared for my sudden break in silence.

“I will do everything in my power to change that statement. I won’t force it, but you will change your words. I will…coax it out of you,” Edward said with a smirk, stepping behind me. I feared what he would do, but I stood my ground.
