Gene Conley

In 1962, I finished 15–14. I threw 241 innings and had an ERA of 3.95. But that’s not what people remember. What I am asked all the time: why did I want to go to Jerusalem?

—Gene Conley

Gene Conley was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, on November 10, 1930. At Washington State University, he pitched on the baseball team that went to the College World Series and played well enough on the basketball team to be selected honorable mention to the All-America college team.

In August 1950, the six-foot-eight Conley signed with the Boston Braves for $3,000. In 1954 he made the National League All-Star Team and was third in the Rookie of the Year voting. He made one appearance against the Yankees in the World Series in 1957 and played for the Braves, now the Milwaukee Braves, through the 1959 season.
