Chapter 19

I don’t get much of an explanation other than something has happened, and Frank wants me to get Alex out of town. He says he can’t tell me anything else as it’s Alex’s story to tell; if she wants to. Then he asks me to quickly pack our things and to send Alex downstairs.

It all just seems a bit odd.

I thank him for the scotch and reassure him that I’ll take care of everything. Popping my head in the kitchen, I tell Alex that her grandfather is looking for her and then head right to her room to start packing. There isn’t much, and after setting aside our clothes for today, I put the rest in the suitcase along with my pajama pants. As I reach for my jeans, I feel like I’ve suddenly been trampled by the entire All Blacks rugby team. And that’s when I hear Alex scream.

I take off running down the hall. I almost whack myself in the face with the basement door when I pull it open, before jumping the staircase. There’s no one at the bar. When I tell her that hearing her yell struck me with a tangible fear, a part of my brain wonders why everyone else didn’t come running downstairs.

“Her what?” Frank asks completely perplexed.

Alex’s head snaps up. Her usually radiant chestnut eyes are wet, bloodshot, and filled with something I can’t quite define. Her tear streaked face looks ashen. I just want to sit down next to her and wrap her up in my arms, but I don’t think that would go well.

“How?” she asks, her whisper full of uncertainty.

I could easily go with humor to try to lighten the moment. Instead, I tell her that I’m not entirely sure myself. Frank glances back and forth between us with a questioning look. Alex says something to him in Spanish, then curls up against his shoulder. He sits her up a bit so that he can wrap his arm around her, then tucks her back up against him. When his sad eyes turn towards mine, I nod and pat Alex on the knee before standing up.

I quickly glance at the opened newspaper on the table, then head upstairs to finish getting everything ready to leave. I’ll need to figure out how to pick up a copy of
