At seven o’clock that evening, the six mildly fearless Voyagers met up on the steps to the office building. Jack was there, waiting for us, with a backpack and a huge duffel bag. Up to that point, we’d each accomplished lessons one through six, and tonight was our big night, our final test of endurance.
He smiled as we all approached. “Evening, ladies. Glad to see none of you chickened out. Who’s excited?”
The twins raised their hands.
“That’s a start,” he said. “All right then, let’s get this party rolling. Follow me.”
Jack took us on a one-hour hike, far into the woods surrounding the lake, and we could almost see the lights from the camp across the water. We were farther than I’d thought we were going to be.
Eventually, he stopped under a large evergreen, set down his duffel, and grabbed a folder from his backpack. “All right, from here, I’m going to walk each of you out to your own spot, away from each other, and I’ll give you a series of choices. Once you’ve made your choices, I will leave you for the night. Got it?”
We all nodded with little confidence, like baby chicks—except for Brittany.
Her hand went up, and her chest went out. “Can I go first?” she asked.
“Sure,” he said. “I’ll take Brittany first. You all figure out what order you’re going in by the time I come back. And in the morning, everyone is to stay put until I come and get you.”
Jack shifted his backpack onto his other shoulder and turned his baseball cap around, glancing at me before walking away.
I took a deep breath. “I’d like to go last,” I told the group.
No one else really cared when they went. Along with the remaining girls, I sat under the tree next to Emma as she bit her nails down to the nubs, and I waited my turn.
When Jack came back after dropping the last girl in her spot, we were alone, and he extended his hand to me.
“Off your ass, lazy bird,” he said, pulling me to my feet.
We officially held hands for a second or two.
“You ready?” he asked, lowering his chin.
I nodded.
“Come with me.” He grabbed the duffel bag.
I walked next to him for about ten minutes. He had one hand gripping the strap of the bag and the other dangling precariously close to mine. It was so close that I simply couldn’t resist the urge to swing my arms a little harder than normal and brush my skin against his. He pretended not to notice, which made me question my abilities as a flirt, so I crossed my arms.
We stopped walking in the middle of nowhere. In fact, there was nothing about where we stopped that resembled a place where anyone would stop for any reason.
I looked at him. “You’re kidding, right?”
He shook his head and lowered the duffel off his shoulder. “No, I’m not kidding. This is your spot.”
I looked around. My stomach turned, and I began to perspire. “I’m nervous,” I said quietly.
