Trinity was her new favorite person. Danielle leaned against the passenger door as the girl prattled on and on about what she was going to do at Janie’s. Across the bench seat Gideon had sent Danielle repeated looks over the girl’s head, letting her know he had no intention of letting the tension stand, but right now she didn’t want to talk about it.

Partly because she was still too mad and partly because she knew she was being oversensitive. And the fact that she was being oversensitive at all made her even madder.

It wasn’t the makeup itself. Honestly, the stuff made her want to rub her eyes constantly, and she had breathed a sigh of relief to scrub it off. But to have him point out that she again didn’t have what it took to pull off something feminine had stung.

He had called her beautiful, but Danielle had read enough novels over the past few months to know the word was more about who she was as a person. Which was great—amazing actually. After all, she wanted Gideon to care about her for who she was, not what she looked like. But was it too much to want the guy to find her attractive too? Especially when Danielle had spent the past few years watching girls who were drop-dead gorgeous throw themselves at him.

Gideon pulled through the stop sign then slowed along the curb in front of Janie’s house. “After we drop off Trin, do you want me to come to the garage to help—”

“Nope.” Danielle’s voice was unusually high pitched. “I already texted the guys and told them not to come in until Monday.”

As soon as Gideon shoved the truck into park, Danielle popped her and Trinity’s seatbelts and jumped out with Trinity. “I’ll take her up. Feel free to head back. I’m okay walking to the garage from here.”

Then with a quick slam of the door, she hurried to the steps. She had just reached the bottom one with Trinity when the truck’s engine turned off, followed by Gideon’s door opening and closing. So much for that escape.

Janie had her front door open before they reached the top. “I just pulled some cookies out of the oven. Who’s hungry?”

“Me, me.” Trinity banged snow off her boots and rushed inside.

Gideon started to decline but Danielle jumped in. “I’d love some.”

He stared at her profile a moment before nodding and following her into the house. He shrugged off his coat and hung it by the door. “I need to use the bathroom first.”

“TMI, Gideon.” Trinity held up her hand with a wiggle of her head.

Gideon chuckled as he made a face at his sister.

As soon as he’d disappeared down the hall, Danielle scooped up a cookie and walked to the door, keeping her voice low. “Actually, I have to head out. But I’ll catch you later.”

Janie looked between Danielle and the hall before nodding. “Don’t be a stranger.”

Danielle rushed out and closed the door as quietly as she could before racing down the steps and across the street.
