CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

(Voilà)

“Pardon my French, but who the fuck are you?” Buck demanded in an attempt to regain control of a world that was rapidly spinning out of his wheelhouse.

“Do you kiss that pretty young lady with that foul mouth of yours?” Lenny asked Buck, while gesturing towards Renee. Without looking, he snatched the cell phone out of Mac’s hand before it had moved from his pocket to his ear. Lenny held the phone’s speaker to his own ear just as a voice answered, “Security.”

“Make sure General Sheridan is not disturbed for the next half-hour,” Lenny commanded, then killed the screen with a tap of his finger and tossed Mac his broken phone. “Whoops.”

Fergus growled and went to leap out of his basket, but Apollo pointed a finger, froze him in mid-air and gently returned him to the soft pillow he had been resting on.

“What did you do to Fergus?” Buck shouted.

“He’s fine, General Sheridan.” Stella answered calmly. “And as long as everyone stays calm, you’ll have no problems with us.”

Eddie leaned his back against the office door.

Whitey peeked out the window at the various groups of soldiers racing around the perimeter, checking inside buildings, and inside and under vehicles while astonished looking officers did their best to maintain their composure after witnessing the impossible.

A fireteam of soldiers headed up the walkway towards Buck’s office.

“Incoming!” Whitey called to the others.

Stella waited until the last of the soldiers had entered the building and then waved her hands. Everyone but the crew froze mid movement, including Buck and Renee. Whitey looked back out the window. Even the sentry at the door was frozen at attention, and none of the squads patrolling the streets even noticed.

Stella scanned Buck’s mind and then touched his forehead, reanimating him.

“What the hell?!” Buck shouted, holding his forehead like he was trying to keep his brains from leaking out. He stepped back from Stella, just as Apollo appeared behind him and forced him into his chair like the large man was a three-year-old. “Is Nicolo behind this?”

Buck spotted Renee and Mac still standing like mannequins. “If you hurt either one of them -”

“Relax, General.” Lenny said, cutting him off. “We come in peace!” He looked at the other hybrids and grinned. “Damn, I’ve always wanted to say that!” Then he turned back towards the general and in a more serious voice continued. “But sir, we need to talk. Now!”

Stella mentally scanned Renee then touched her forehead. The Lieutenant Colonel looked around like she had just woken from a deep sleep. She appeared a bit unsteady.

“Jesus Christ!” Renee said as she tried to recover her bearings. “Who are you?”

Stella gently ushered Renee around the desk and sat her in one of the chairs. Renee focused on the still frozen Mac. “Is he okay?”

“It’s okay, Renee,” Buck said, trying to calm her. “These folks are not here to harm us.” He looked to Lenny for confirmation. Lenny nodded. Buck then looked up at Apollo, who, scanning his mind, also nodded.

“Not sure
