Chapter Ten
Ugh. I blew it. Whatâs the matter with me, anyhow? She thought about how she ended their last phone call. Nate Smith was probably the best thing to happen to her in two years. She was beginning to think that she probably deserved this when the phone rang. Startled, she picked it up after only one ring and said an anxious âHello?â
There was a long pause. Finally an unexpected voice said, âIs my father there?â
âTy?â Ronda asked.
âYes. Whoâs this?â
âRonda ⦠Ronda Calhoun.â
âReally?â Tyâs voice betrayed his amazement.
âOh, itâs not what you might be thinking. I had to stay in your guest room for a couple of nights because someone broke into my house.â
âOh. Geez, Iâm sorry. Are you okay? Is your place all right?â
âYes and yes. I donât think Iâll be here much longer. In fact I thought you were Nate calling me back. I was going to ask permission to go home.â
âYou have to ask his permission?â
Ronda chuckled, more at herself than at Ty. âI guess when someone violates your space you can turn into a little girl in nothing flat.â
âI understand. Iâm not sure I wouldnât turn into a little girl. Listen, not to cut you short, but I have to talk to my dad about his flight plans so that I know when to pick him up at the airport.â
âOh, of course. Let me get him.â Ronda pressed the hold button, leaned over the railing outside the guest room, and called, âTOMMY, itâs TY.â
Ronda, giving up on Nate, turned out the light, put her head on the pillow, and tried to sleep. About five minutes after her light was out, the phone rang again.
This time Tommy answered and yelled upstairs. âRONDA, itâs NATE.â
She sat up, flicked on the light and picked up the phone. âNate?â
âYes. You called me?â His voice sounded flat and matter of fact.
âYeah, I did. First of all, I want to apologize for hanging up on you earlier. Are you mad at me?â
âWell my ego was bruised, but Iâm okay. No, Iâm not mad.â
âGood. Um ⦠that was really sweet what you said before.â
âIâm sorry, Ronnie. It was premature, and you have other things on your mind.â
âYeah, but I didnât have to be terrified. Iâm really sorry. Honest.â
âForget it. Listen, when can I see you?â
âTomorrow night at my cottage? I think itâs safe to go back there, donât you?â
âSure. Whatever you want. Itâs up to you.â
âSeriously?â
Nate chuckled. âYeah.â
âWhatâs so funny?â
âIâll tell you tomorrow. What time?â
âI donât know ⦠around six?â
âI should be able to get up there by six. Can I take you out to dinner?â
âHow about if I cook?â
âCan you?â He sounded surprised, and she didnât know if he was serious or not.
âOf course I can. Or, at least I can learn by tomorrow night.â
They both chuckled and she hung up happy. Ronda flopped backward onto the bed, relieved. He was cute and good to her and awfully smart. Thank God he was forgiving too. Falling asleep after that was no trouble at all.
