Chapter Ten

Ugh. I blew it. What’s the matter with me, anyhow? She thought about how she ended their last phone call. Nate Smith was probably the best thing to happen to her in two years. She was beginning to think that she probably deserved this when the phone rang. Startled, she picked it up after only one ring and said an anxious “Hello?”

There was a long pause. Finally an unexpected voice said, “Is my father there?”

“Ty?” Ronda asked.

“Yes. Who’s this?”

“Ronda … Ronda Calhoun.”

“Really?” Ty’s voice betrayed his amazement.

“Oh, it’s not what you might be thinking. I had to stay in your guest room for a couple of nights because someone broke into my house.”

“Oh. Geez, I’m sorry. Are you okay? Is your place all right?”

“Yes and yes. I don’t think I’ll be here much longer. In fact I thought you were Nate calling me back. I was going to ask permission to go home.”

“You have to ask his permission?”

Ronda chuckled, more at herself than at Ty. “I guess when someone violates your space you can turn into a little girl in nothing flat.”

“I understand. I’m not sure I wouldn’t turn into a little girl. Listen, not to cut you short, but I have to talk to my dad about his flight plans so that I know when to pick him up at the airport.”

“Oh, of course. Let me get him.” Ronda pressed the hold button, leaned over the railing outside the guest room, and called, “TOMMY, it’s TY.”

Ronda, giving up on Nate, turned out the light, put her head on the pillow, and tried to sleep. About five minutes after her light was out, the phone rang again.

This time Tommy answered and yelled upstairs. “RONDA, it’s NATE.”

She sat up, flicked on the light and picked up the phone. “Nate?”

“Yes. You called me?” His voice sounded flat and matter of fact.

“Yeah, I did. First of all, I want to apologize for hanging up on you earlier. Are you mad at me?”

“Well my ego was bruised, but I’m okay. No, I’m not mad.”

“Good. Um … that was really sweet what you said before.”

“I’m sorry, Ronnie. It was premature, and you have other things on your mind.”

“Yeah, but I didn’t have to be terrified. I’m really sorry. Honest.”

“Forget it. Listen, when can I see you?”

“Tomorrow night at my cottage? I think it’s safe to go back there, don’t you?”

“Sure. Whatever you want. It’s up to you.”

“Seriously?”

Nate chuckled. “Yeah.”

“What’s so funny?”

“I’ll tell you tomorrow. What time?”

“I don’t know … around six?”

“I should be able to get up there by six. Can I take you out to dinner?”

“How about if I cook?”

“Can you?” He sounded surprised, and she didn’t know if he was serious or not.

“Of course I can. Or, at least I can learn by tomorrow night.”

They both chuckled and she hung up happy. Ronda flopped backward onto the bed, relieved. He was cute and good to her and awfully smart. Thank God he was forgiving too. Falling asleep after that was no trouble at all.
