nounced to Rudy that they would have to take a couple of days to check for damages.

Rudy wired Key West for more money and had a beer at the Beachcomber before walking over to the old Chalk's Terminal. He was standing in the urine-saturated phone booth wondering whether Kevin Costner was the right actor to play him in the movie version of his story when the phone rang.

34: Bless Me, Father

Rudy Breno's sweat-soaked shirt stuck like glue to the rear seat of the dilapidated white Cadillac taxi that had picked him up at Chalk's Terminal. Traffic packed the narrow bridge that connected the casinos and hotels to the main island—an urban nightmare never described or photographed in Nassau travel brochures. Steam escaped from under the long hood of the Cadillac with an angry hiss that was barely audible above the rantings of a fundamentalist preacher on the radio.

Rudy slouched and tried to lower the electric window, but the Cadillac was without power. He opened the door to get some air but was overcome with engine-exhaust fumes and a hodgepodge of waterfront smells. They had mixed with the stifling heat into some kind of evil potion that hung over downtown Nassau and had the islanders in a very bad mood. He fanned himself rapidly with his reporter's notepad—the one he'd used when the mystery man had called him at the Chalk's pay phone an hour earlier. He'd made a tape of the conversation and had jotted down the directions to the rendezvous spot.

A loud bang unglued Rudy from the Naugahyde seat cover. The driver cranked and cranked at the ignition until the grinding noise of the starter was replaced by the clicking sound of the exhausted solenoid.

"Dis a worthless pile a Detroit shit," the driver snarled.

"Praise Jesus and all His glory," the radio preacher wailed as a woman began speaking in tongues.

"What seems to be the problem, sir?" Rudy asked.
