chapter fourteen

“Remember how you said you really wanted to know how Brian’s sister died all that time ago?” Adam asks out of nowhere the next day.

“What?” I ask, dumbfounded. Then I remember that I had told him about Jazmin, back when Brian first moved here, and I found out she had died.

I hadn’t brought it up anymore, not since Michelle had gotten upset about me asking.

“Do you remember—” He starts again, but I finally get what he asked.

“—Yeah, I remember,” I interrupt.

“Well, I think I know why he didn’t want to talk about it,” he says quietly.

We’re in math class, and Mr. Powell is solving last night’s homework problems on the board, and I’m trying to follow what he’s doing for when I do these problems with Brian later.

But I can’t help but want to find out about Jazmin even more.

“What is it?” I ask.

Adam takes a deep breath. “Yeah, well, it’s not good. I don’t even know how to say it, Katia.”

What’s that supposed to mean?

“Tell me what you know, Adam,” I say a little too loud. The teacher turns back to give me a death stare before returning to the whiteboard.

“Tell me,” I whisper shout at Adam, not caring about the homework problems anymore.

Adam sighs.

“My mom wouldn’t tell me specifically, said it wasn’t any of our business. But she said that his sister shouldn’t have died. Brian was supposed to be watching her, and that’s when she died.”

I’m horrified at what I just heard come out of Adam’s mouth.

“What?” I ask. “Are you sure?”

He nods. “She wouldn’t tell me anything else. But she has a friend who used to work with his mom and she heard all about it when it happened.”

“Oh my gosh,” I whisper, mostly to myself. I look at Adam again. “That can’t be true. His siblings are all he cares about.”

“Well, yeah,” he says.

This doesn’t make sense.

“When did this happen?” I ask.

“My mom said he was ten.”

I do the math in my head. Brian is seventeen now. Jazmin died seven years ago. She would have been twelve because I know she was five at the time.

And Brian was ten years old when it happened. Maybe close to eleven.

Then I realize something else.

Jazmin died right after Brian and his family moved away.

“Brian…” I start. But I don’t even know how to finish that sentence.

“I don’t know, Katia. Maybe you should ask him what happened. You never know…”

I stare at Adam. “What are you trying to say? That he must have been careless? That he did it on purpose? That he let his sister die?” I ask. I can feel the teacher and everyone else’s look at me. Adam looks towards the front of the class.

The teacher must be staring daggers at us right now, but I don’t care.

“That’s not Brian,” I say and I go back to copying these problems off the board, ignoring everyone’s eyes on me.

It must have been an accident. It had to be.
