Arriving at school, I’d managed to ignore the laughter and whispers from the direction of Tracy and her friends on the bus. I’d waited for them to exit before swinging my bag over my shoulder and climbing off, making sure they were well ahead of me before I went to my first class. It wasn’t until middle period that I had Geography with Tracy and I stood back as we waited for the teacher Mr. Mathews to arrive and waited until she’d gone in before finding a desk at the very front of the classroom.

“Open your textbooks to page two hundred and fifteen,” said Mr. Mathews his eyes not leaving whatever he was doing on his laptop.

He was a young teacher, mid-twenties, and I’d overhead girls saying they found him attractive. He had dark hair that he swept to the side and his skin had the same golden glow as mine. But he wasn’t muscular, so I assumed he didn’t work on a farm. Maybe he was into surfing? There was a beach not too far from Bilstone.

When I was younger, we’d go on weekends away to the beach and stay in a cabin. We hadn’t gone for years. It didn’t worry me too much, for starters I didn’t even own a bikini and the thought of sand getting everywhere made me screw up my nose. How had Olivia spent so much time on that island with Nova without having a shower?

“You keeping up Lucy?” Mr. Mathew’s voice pulled me from my thoughts and I met his gaze from where he stood behind his desk.

“Yes, sir.” My cheeks heated.

“Can you please read the next paragraph for me?” he asked.

I scanned the page I’d opened to and looked up at him with a lost expression.

“Just as I thought. Daydreaming, were we?”

“Sorry sir,” I replied, my eyes back on my book’s pages.

“You will be when you don’t pass your exam next week,” he said, walking towards his laptop. “Now, I want you all to look at the whiteboard…”

The classroom erupted into laughter and Mr. Mathews stopped dead in his tracks as an image of a naked man appeared on the board. Only, it wasn’t completely a man. My head, cropped from last year’s school photo, had replaced his.

My stomach flipped and I clenched my teeth together in an effort not to cry. My head grew light, the sound of their laughing filling every empty space inside it.

Mr. Mathews must have come to his senses because he was yelling at the class, asking them who was responsible. But my ears still echoed with the sound of their laughter and I rose from my chair stumbling a little as my body willed me to run. Leaving my books behind, I made it to the door, laughter following me as I burst outside running down the hall, tears streaming down my face.

What had I done to deserve this? This humiliation from a girl who didn’t even know me. I ran to the girl’s toilets and
