“I can’t believe you are here flaunting that woman,” Mother said.

Roy said something, but I had already stopped listening to him. He treated Sammy as if she were a commodity on the market and not a potential business partner. And now, the more my mom said the less I paid attention to her words.

“You are a married man, and that woman is not your wife. You are out here flaunting your mistress. I can’t believe you brought her to my event. These people are my friends. I’m going to have to explain who she was. What am I supposed to say when people think she is my daughter-in-law because you had your arm around her? If she is simply a business acquaintance, why does your tie match her dress? You should be ashamed. I’m embarrassed.”

She went on and on. I didn’t hear the words. I heard the pounding rush of blood through my veins and the droning noise of her infinite disappointment. My anger kept building with each resentful word either of them said.

“That woman you are being so rude about is my guest, and the CEO of a company we are trying to acquire. I suggest—”

“You suggest?” Mom cut me off. “Alex, you are in no position to suggest anything. Your wife would be the appropriate person for you to accompany to an event such as this. Your wife. Or is she even real?”

My gaze narrowed as my anger grew.

“Is she aware of your philandering ways? Are you so embarrassed by her? I told you, you should have married a slender woman, someone who would have kept her figure. Are you so embarrassed to bring her along? Does she know you see other women and now she won’t be seen with you? Why is she in hiding, Alex?”

Mom kept barraging me with questions. I don’t think she bothered to stop and breathe before she unleashed another question, I wasn’t willing to answer. I turned and left. I wasn’t going to give my mom any further opportunity to berate me about Sammy this evening. We would leave as soon as she was ready. I didn’t want to stay any longer than was necessary.

I didn’t see her. Where the hell had she gone? I scanned the crowd, still nothing. I stopped at the nearest tasting table.

“Did you see that woman I was with early? Shapely in a purple dress?”

The server at the table stared at me for a moment. I couldn’t tell if they were thinking or if their brain had stopped working. “Yeah, she bought a taste and then just left it,” they finally answered.

“Did you see where she went?” I asked.

They pointed vaguely toward the front of the event. “I think she went that way. Sorry, man, I was helping other people. I only really paid attention because I had spent some time going over how the wine tasting worked, and then she didn’t even bother to try it after I poured her a full glass.”

I thanked him and hurried to find Sammy.
