“It’s very complicated, you see,” Dr. Obregon began as she lead Marshal and Violetta outside the room where they had just conversed with the ghost of their old friend.

“Seems like most things are on this planet,” Marshal said. “Whatever that was in there, that is not the program we knew as Charles. Charles never twitched in emotion like the voice of that program did. You ought to do him a favor and pull the plug.”

Dr. Obregon nodded in acknowledgement as she lead them into another office, almost an exact copy of the one they were just in.

“He’s asked us to terminate him many, many times, Commander Noel,” the doctor said.

“Then why don’t you do it?” Violetta started in. “Listen, lady, you’ve been bullshitting us about everything. Come clean now and tell us what the hell is going on with Charles!”

The doctor listened as she crossed the table and once again took the seat across from them. Marshal and Violetta remained standing.

“As I promised you both earlier, I will explain how Charles has come to the state he is in. I would also like to explain while doing the humane thing, in this circumstance, shutting down the program, is not an option. I know after everything the two of you have just been through, reliving the past and being asked to give Earth what must seem like some sort of technical support, must be aggravating. I promised you both an explanation, and that is all I will give. Charles cannot hear us now, so we are safe to discuss anything. Feel free to ask me questions as I go along.”

The word safe struck both of them as odd. Safe from who? From Charles? Marshal noticed the doctor had become less timid. She seemed confident that whatever she was about to say was worth their time hearing. Violetta sat down first, followed a few seconds later by Marshal. The doctor took a breath, straightened her neck, and began to tell them what became of Charles Sheridan.

“Mu saw Charles as the last step in building his weapon. He got that chip from the two of you and it did not take long to figure out what was on it. Mu had been devoting a number of departments to building what he had just been handed, artificial intelligence. It was his goal to build ships and soldiers that could be deployed to do any task we asked of them, and if they never came back, we could just build more. Building the prototypes; the soldiers and the ships, that was the easy part. Designing a software that could carry out exact orders and adhere complete and unquestionable loyalty of Earth Fleet, more specifically, Mu; that was the hard part.”

“That’s not hard at all. That kind of software has existed for centuries,” Marshal interjected. The snow outside the window started to fall hard. It made him think of Marina. “Quite frankly, doctor, I don’t really give a shit about the mess General Mu and whomever else here made of Charles.
