Chapter Nine

There was no lack of places to hold illegal underground fights. Micah John held Etta’s hand secure in his as he made his way through the abandoned buildings, following the noise of the crowd. The area was supposed to be a water park at some point, an oasis in the desert, but the place had folded, probably because putting water in the middle of nowhere cost a shit load of cash. Graffiti painted the chipped columns and crumbling walls. Lots of shadowy places to hide, and Micah John made sure to avoid the darkest corners. He was having second thoughts about letting Etta accompany him, although he doubted he’d have been strong enough to say no. All she had to do was look at him with those heavenly eyes and he was sucker-punched.

“Psst. MJ.”

Micah John paused and looked around. Ears walked from a nook, appearing like an apparition, and Etta wrapped herself around his arm.

“Fuck, Ears, you think you could make a better dramatic entrance?”

Ears grinned. “Who’s the broad?”

“None of your fucking business.”

“Just trying to be polite. I did give you this tip, after all.”

Micah John sighed. “This is Henrietta. Etta, this is Ears.”

“How do you do?” she asked politely, if a bit stiffly.

“I’m doing well, Miss Henrietta. It’s very nice for you to be so polite. Not many people show me their good manners.”

“Ears,” Micah John warned.

Ears held up his hands. “All right. Don’t bust my balls for flirting a little. Like I said, Iron Fist is expected to win. His opponent is Blackout.”

He held out some tickets in his hand. Micah John took them and saw betting statistics. “Holy shit. Is this for real?”

“Yep. Go on in. The password is kill buzz.”

And just like that, Ears turned and disappeared back into the darkness. One minute he was there the next he was gone. Micah John shook his head.

“That man is weird.”

“I liked him,” Etta said.

He snorted. “You would. Now, I have seventeen hundred dollars and Blackout is going off at eighty to one odds which means…”

“That’s over a hundred and thirty thousand dollars.”

“Yep. Enough to pay what I owe and give us a little money until I can figure something out.”

“And no more gambling, right, Micah John? Promise me.”

He cupped her face. She was so beautiful it made his heart hurt. He had no idea what had brought her into his life, but he was very thankful he’d gone with his gut and went back for her. “I promise.”

Micah John could no longer resist the call of her lips and bent his head to brush his mouth over hers. It was just the merest hint of a kiss, but it was enough to send electricity dancing through his body. He ran his tongue across the seam of her lips and as she gasped in surprise, he surged inside to explore. The tentative brush of her own tongue against his was enough to almost make him forget where they were. Reluctantly, he pulled back. Her eyes were wide and although he couldn’t see the pupils, he suspected they were dilated.
