Accountability communication between teachers and parents is important because underachievers almost always lie about their schoolwork. Teachers may want to state that gently to parents. Underachievers may bend the truth, report A’s, but not D’s and F’s, claim they have no homework when they prefer not to do it, excuse themselves from efforts by saying they don’t recall the assignments, and blame teachers for losing assignments they haven’t accomplished or handed in.

Research finds home-to-school notes are important, and consistent use of such notes is essential in establishing a communication system among parents, students, and teachers regarding student progress (Nahmias, 1995). Home-to-school notes promote consistency in expectations and help teachers and parents develop a common language. These notes may be simple check sheets or lists for reporting student behavior and/or academic work. Using daily or weekly journals is helpful when more elaborate information is needed (Williams & Cartledge, 1997). Teachers and parents also have opportunities to regularly communicate through formal and informal meetings and telephone calls. The key is to promote good communication so that the parent, teacher, and student can become a collaborative team (Bos, Nahmias, & Urban, 1999).

Figure 7 provides a sample form that teachers might send home weekly. Similar forms or notes can be used daily for elementary school children. Signed assignment notebooks or e-mails are also ideal for keeping parents abreast of their children’s efforts.
