With a sick feeling in his stomach, David entered the Pregnancy Help Center. He found Ruby examining a box of baby bottles and breast pumps. She looked gaunt and weary even though it was still morning. She was also alone. He shut the door. Immediately Ruby looked up in surprise. They had always left the door open whenever they were alone so David wouldn’t violate his rules.

“It’s okay,” he reassured her. “This is one time when I can shut the door. I’m releasing you.”

Ruby shook her head. “I don’t understand.”

“I’m stopping my courtship. I will not marry you.”

Trembling, her face contorted into a look of shock. “But I love you! Did I do something wrong?”

David’s eyes watered. “No, you’re a wonderful woman, you did nothing wrong. It is I who have been wrong. Forgive me!”

“I do David! What’s going on?”

“Your place is here, with these people. It’s your calling. The thought of leaving is killing you. I can’t let you suffer anymore. It’s not the loving thing to do.”

Ruby’s shoulders shook violently. She hung her head. Placing his hands on her shoulders, David spoke tenderly to her.

“I will always love and respect you. You’ve done nothing wrong. Do you understand?”

She nodded and collapsed into his arms, weeping. He stroked her hair.

“You’re free,” he soothed. “You don’t have to worry anymore. The decision is done. I’ll still come and work until I have to leave. If I come back to this area, I’ll visit you.”

As she released her pent-up anxiety with tears, David placed a hand on Ruby’s head and prayed over her.
