At midday on that same day, Mr. Thorne's meeting, about which we have already heard, was due to start in Sevastopol Square. The gun in the centre was draped with flags and the plinth decorated with pot plants contributed by the denizens of the square, and the benches in the little garden were decorated with the denizens themselves, who had come out early to make sure of their seats and to enjoy the sunshine and the music from the brass section of the orchestra, all seven of which had turned out to entertain them, encouraged by a handsome donation to the work of the Barchester Mission on the part of Mr. Thorne.. Noon was announced by the midday chimes from the cathedral and Mr. Thorne arrived, having walked up from the Dragon accompanied by Mr. Simpson and Mr. Grant.
Mr. Thorne wasted no time: he thanked his audience for coming to hear this stranger, thrust upon them from outside, so he described himself, and then explained his connections with the county and the Thorne family, both of which were closer than most people suspected. Charles Thorne, it appeared, was the great-grandson of the younger brother of old Mr. Thorne of Ullathorne, who had been the father of that Mr. Thorne and his sister Monica who, as my readers may remember, had once given a breakfast and fête champêtre at Ullathorne to entertain their neighbours. There had been a breach between this younger brother and his senior, some said on account of the younger man's having carried off the lady on whom the elder had cast his choice. The younger had left Ullathorne and was next heard of in the city of London as a married man. The lady in question had left with him, breaking her engagement to the elder within a fortnight of the wedding, or so it was said. It had taken the elder Thorne ten years to find another bride.
Neither of the runaways ever returned, nor were they ever invited to do so, and the breach seemed to have become a permanent estrangement. The younger man had entered the law and made a name for himself. His younger son had married into the Palliser family, a first cousin of the then Duke, and their grandson was the present Mt. Thorne. Mr. Charles Thorne was a barrister and a coming man, according to those who knew him. He spoke of his aims and his wishes for the people of Barset and the city of Barchester and hoped that he could implement their wishes. He understood that one of the most deeply desired institutions was a hospital and he understood also that they had come a long way to obtaining it and assured them that anything he might be able to do to assist them in this project he would most willingly do. Already, he said, they had invited him to serve on the Committee, and he promised that, whether he were elected or not, he would do all he could do to help.
