You see, Cain and Abel each gave God a gift. The Lord, showing deplorable manners even for such a primitive time, churlishly told Cain that his gift was not nearly good enough (Genesis 4:5) and He was going to take it back for store credit. Cain, rebuffed for his rushed gift selection, went away in a rage. After all, no one wants to go down in history as the world’s first bad shopper. As a result of the jealousy inspired by God’s rather ungrateful response to Cain’s gift, Cain killed the brother who showed an uncanny knack for picking out the perfect little something to please even the most demanding—God. Truly, what do you buy the guy who made everything? Well, it can’t have left either Adam or Eve feeling too comfortable to know that there was a killer in the house. I imagine that this unease was aggravated when they took a moment to contemplate the dearth of options Cain had when it came time to decide whom to kill next.
