JUNCKERâS HEROICS
SIR â Itâs a little disappointing if the worst the sceptics can find to say about Jean-Claude Juncker, the potential President of the European Commission, is that he has cognac for breakfast. If true, it is a foible which would have endeared him to Dr Johnson, who wrote: âClaret is the liquor for boys, port for men, but he who aspires to be a hero must drink brandy.â
Charles Keen
Duntisbourne Rouse, Gloucestershire
SIR â The good news about the appointment of Juncker is that he seems well qualified to organise a booze-up in a brewery â one task, among many, that has eluded the Commission since its inception.
Richard Endacott
Reading, Berkshire
SIR â Is any information available on the travel plans of Crown Prince Jean-Claude Juncker this coming Saturday, 28 June 2014?
Paul Gregory
Berlin, Germany
SIR â Walking up the High Street in Newport, Shropshire, one Saturday morning in 1941 with friends from a nearby school, we saw a lorry loaded with the remains of a German Junker 88 bomber. We could not resist helping ourselves to a small souvenir.
Should I offer the broken fragment of a Junkerâs fuselage to the Prime Minister to brighten the Cabinet Room table?
Sydney Preston
Sevenoaks, Kent
SIR â Although I hate to admit it, I have to side with EU chief Jean-Claude Juncker when he says David Cameron has no common sense. Cameron may have had an Eton education, but he has zilch up top. No way would I trust him on the battlefield. He would be a disaster.
