I was in the shower when Monty started barking. I stuck my head out and listened, hearing the familiar voice of my magical historian. “I’ll be out in a few,” I called out to Wanda. I didn’t get a response. But I hadn’t really expected one.

Fifteen minutes later, I found her handing Monty a dog cookie he didn’t need. Her own cookie, the human kind, was clutched in her other hand.

“Hey,” I said, giving the teen a one-armed hug. “You’re early.” By about seven hours, but who was watching the clock? Besides me.

Wanda shrugged and crammed the last bite of cookie into her mouth.

“You want milk?”

She nodded, her gaze on the narrow door that led to the belfry. She and my resident bat had some kind of weird attachment for each other. Or, at least, she seemed attached to the bat. I had no idea what the flying rodent was thinking at any given moment.

I handed her a glass of milk while thinking about the bat. “I should name the flying rodent,” I said out loud, surprising myself.

She looked at me over the rim of her glass. “You know she already has a name, right?”

I blinked. Clearly, I hadn’t known that. I opened my mouth to ask what it was and got distracted by a soft weight against my leg.

“Meow.”

I glanced down at Wraith. The feline had given me a drive-by rub and was winding herself around Wanda’s ankles, oblivious to the grimace the girl threw her way. Wanda apparently didn’t care for cats. I plucked Wraith off the ground before she could escape me, burying my face in her soft, glossy fur. “Hello, girl. How are you today?”

Wraith batted at a strand of my shoulder-length black hair, seemingly captivated by the silver tips. Lately, I’d been toying with the idea of changing the color but hadn’t done more than think about it. Given my current role and the company I was keeping, the straight black hair with silver tips seemed somehow appropriate.

“I have to leave,” I told Wanda, watching her for signs of disappointment. I didn’t fool myself into believing the girl cared about my presence one way or the other, but I felt bad leaving her behind anyway.

“Oh.” She glanced toward the belfry door again. “Okay.”

“I…” the words died on my lips as she turned those dark-as-night, overly made-up eyes in my direction. Then, I decided to go for it. “I don’t suppose you want to come with me?”

She blinked in surprise. “Come with you?”

I smiled, happy she hadn’t immediately shot me down. “Yeah. I need to check on some demons. I know that’s not exactly a day at the shopping mall, but…”

Something that looked like real regret passed over her features. “I…can’t.”

I must have looked disappointed because she clarified. “The curse.”

“Right. The curse.” I set the cat onto the floor, where her fur rippled as if trying to expel my cooties. “Have you tried leaving since Bev and Mavis started working on getting rid of the hex?”

Wanda shrugged, her gaze following Wraith across the room to her bowls.
