Chapter 7:

The Third Trimester Weeks 27 to 40

Welcome to the third trimester. At this point, you and your baby are about two-thirds of the way to the end. But there is still a lot of growing that your baby needs to do. It may feel at some points that there isn’t a way that your belly will grow anymore. But as the baby keeps growing, your belly will grow to accommodate them as well. Here are some of the things that you can expect from the third trimester of the pregnancy.

The third trimester is going to begin during week 27 and will last until the baby is born. This can vary based on each person. Some mothers will give birth a little bit early, some will give birth right at forty weeks, and some will give birth after their due date. But the third trimester will continue going until the baby is born. In some cases, when the baby goes past the due date, you may be induced. This usually happens when you are really overdue and has reached the week 42 of your pregnancy. In the meantime, you have to get through the rest of the third trimester. The good news is that you are almost to the finish line here.

How the Baby Grows During This Time

Your baby will get bigger during the third trimester. They will grow from about two and a half pounds and sixteen inches long during the 28th week to somewhere between six to nine pound and between 19 to 22 inches long when you give birth at 40 weeks. Your baby is going to grow fast so don’t be surprised when they run out of the room, and this leads to some really strong pokes and kicks in your gut.

There are a lot of things to be excited about when you reach the third trimester. Some of the highlights that you can look forward to with your baby during this time include:

The bones: As your baby starts to turn their cartilage over to bone in months seven and eight, they will start to get a lot of calcium from you. This is why it is so important during the third trimester to get plenty of foods with lots of calcium.

Hair, nails, and skin: By the time you reach the 32nd week of pregnancy, the baby’s skin, which was see-through before, is going to become opaque. Then when you reach week 36, the fat will continue to accumulate on the baby, and they will have the nice plump skin that you are going to cuddle when they are born.

Digestive system: The baby’s first poop, the meconium, will start to build up in the intestines in the final few weeks of the pregnancy. This waste is going to be a mix of lanugo, vernix, and blood cells.

The five senses: First, the touch receptors of the baby are going to develop when you reach week 29. By the 31st week of pregnancy, the baby is going to be able to get signals from all the senses.
