Before Sam left his house on New Year’s Day, he had a ninety-minute conversation with his father about his choice to apply to Middlebury. His father told him he agreed with the decision, despite his belief that Sam had a 60 percent shot at getting into Harvard because of the number of people pushing for him. “I think you’ve made the right decision. I just don’t want you applying to Middlebury for the reason that you want to get in somewhere early and that you’re relapsing after the Stanford rejection, afraid of a Harvard rejection.”

“I think I’m applying to Middlebury for the right reasons,” Sam said.

“I hope so.”

In the afternoon Sam and Julie took her dog for a walk on the Billy Goat Trail, a popular hiking path along the Potomac River. Sam told her about his decision to aim for Middlebury. “But I sort of still want to hold out for Harvard,” he admitted.

“You’re better than that,” Julie said. “Don’t hold out for Harvard just because you want to be a Harvard student.”

“No, that’s not the reason,” Sam fudged. But at that moment, when Sam knew full well that Julie was right, he finally was able to let the Ivies go.

JULIE, SENIOR PERCEIVED AS: THE SUPERSTAR

For New Year’s Eve, Julie planned to go to dinner with two girlfriends, pick up Derek and his friend, go together to a party, and then host a sleepover at her house. At dinner, when the girls were alone, one of them asked Julie if she liked Derek.

“Well, I mean, I have for three years,” Julie said.

“Oh,” one nodded. “It’s one of those forever crushes.”

“You and Derek are cute together,” said the other. “You should totally date him.”

Julie wished she could talk to Sam about Derek, but Sam had begun acting strangely toward her, insisting on paying for dinners and giving her thoughtful presents. For reasons she couldn’t articulate, she intuitively thought it might be better for their friendship if she created some space.

The next day Julie learned from a friend that Derek had broken up with his girlfriend. That same night Derek IMed Julie to tell her that, now that he was newly freed, he was interested in hanging out with another girl but he didn’t know who was available.

Derek: no seriously. Who is there?
