So if you’re craving a cheeseburger, skip the drive-through and make one at home (with a lower-fat beef, or better yet, ground turkey, and not over a high flame) in order to decrease your intake of these problematic compounds.

Fertility-Reducing Food: Nonorganic Kale

You are probably wondering why on earth the almighty kale is on a list of foods not to eat. If you’re trying to conceive, kale may not be the best way to go about getting your greens in. Yes, kale is loaded with fiber and micronutrients to support a growing baby, but unfortunately conventional kale made the list of produce with the highest amounts of pesticides. In fact, when different samples of nonorganic kale were tested, there were over 15 different pesticides present. Kale and spinach averaged to have anywhere from 1.1–1.8 times more pesticides than other crops. Since nonorganic fruits and veggies are how most people are exposed to pesticides, trying to avoid ones that make the list of “dirtiest” produce is a good way to decrease the amount that you’re taking in. But this doesn’t mean you should avoid kale completely! If financially feasible, spring for organic. If fresh organic kale (or spinach) isn’t in your budget, try frozen organic kale. Since you can’t use frozen kale for a salad, opt for a cleaner green. Cabbage is a great option that doesn’t have nearly as many pesticides, and it tastes great shredded as a salad base or even roasted to bring out its natural sweetness.
