Layla found Rashad pacing the sidewalk, an intimidating image in all black—black turtleneck, black jeans, and a black leather jacket, with a thick gold chain around his neck.

He stopped when he saw her. “What was that about? And don’t tell me you weren’t on a date, because I know a date when I see one. When I walked up, you were practically hanging all over him.”

“I was not! For your information, we decided we were better off as friends. Yes, I was on a date, but—”

“So that’s it? You get to screw around while I’m at home doing nothing?”

“Didn’t look like you were sitting at home to me. Did you have a date?”

“No, I didn’t have a date. I needed to get out of the house because I couldn’t stop thinking about you, and by the way, we never said it was okay to see other people.”

“That’s not true. I made it very clear that I still want to find the kind of man I can have a future with. Maybe you didn’t hear that, but I’m still looking. Having sex with you doesn’t mean I stopped looking.”

“You’re still looking?” He stared at her, aghast.

“I told you that from the beginning. Why are you acting as if this is new information?”

“Because I can’t believe you were serious. So I’m a filler?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“But that’s what I am, right? Until you find the man of your dreams, you’re passing the time with Rashad, riding his dick until the perfect dick comes along.”

“You’re making me sound like a horrible person.”

“That’s because you are!” he exclaimed. “What kind of sick shit is this? I’m not some seat filler, Layla. I’m a person, with feelings, in case you didn’t notice.”

“You jumped at the chance for a casual relationship, and now you want to act all morally righteous. You’re upset because you saw me with someone else, but that shouldn’t matter. We agreed that we wouldn’t sleep with anyone else, but it’s perfectly fine for us to keep dating until we find the right person. How can we find the right person if we don’t go out with other people?”

“Are you kidding me right now?” A burst of bitter laughter fell from his lips.

“No, Rashad, I’m not. I wasn’t taking myself completely off the market just to have sex with you.”

Mouth hanging open, he looked genuinely surprised. “This is some bullshit.”

“You got that right.” She crossed her arms and looked away from him.

“Okay, you got me back, but this ends now. Tonight.”

“What happened to ‘We’ll do this at your pace?’”

“I didn’t know you were going to be seeing other men!” he yelled.

She laughed softly. “You are a narcissist. You’re used to women throwing themselves at you, and the one time a woman doesn’t, you lose it. You can’t stand the thought that I’m not sitting by the phone waiting for your call. Guess what, I made up my mind, and I do not accept your counteroffer.”

“Why not?”

“Because I said so. If you want to be with me, then we stick to the original rules.
