It was something of a running gag among their friends that Julie and Anna were totally, irrevocably gay for each other. Julie’s boyfriend was particularly notorious for perpetuating the joke, in spite of the obvious embarrassment it caused his petite girlfriend.

Anna might have been embarrassed, once upon a time. However, that was long before she realized that she was, indeed, totally gay for her friend. She felt beyond embarrassment at that point, as if she was an actor in some great cosmic comedy. Of course, she would never reveal how she felt. She was a masochist, but even she had her limits, and she would never come between Julie and her own personal Romeo.

She’d heard rumors that the young man planned to propose to the other woman over spring break, and he’d been trying to weasel some measure of information out of her. As if she knew anything about Julie’s romantic interests. Besides the fact that they had to be tall, dark, handsome, and preferably rich. None of which was true about Jeremy himself, but hell, Julie seemed taken enough with him.

Her phone buzzing on her nightstand was enough to draw her from her thoughts, and she sighed somewhat dramatically, setting aside the book she’d been attempting to read through. She snatched her cell phone as it jittered towards the edge of the stand, sliding her thumb across the screen to view the notification. She raised a brow slowly as she read the sender, wondering what, exactly, Julie would need at three o’clock in the morning. She opened the message, which seemed short and to the point.

“Help.” She read aloud, not really processing the meaning behind the word. She blinked, eyes widening as the message seemed to strike home. She jumped out of bed, pocketing her cell phone and pulling a hoodie on over her pajama top, not bothering to change into something more appropriate as she snagged her keys off the nightstand. She slipped out of her room, tiptoeing past her housemate’s closed door.

Once she was outside, she drew her phone out of her pocket, clutching it in one hand on the chance it began to buzz again. The night was cold, and she realized belatedly that she’d forgotten to grab a pair of slide on shoes before rushing out the door.

She hesitated, feeling her phone buzz in her hand. She swiped the screen once more, reading a message that seemed to indicate the sense of urgency her best friend was experiencing. She whined softly, feet feeling all but frostbitten as she made her way across the lawn, opening her car door and easing into the driver’s seat with a soft grunt. Deciding that panicking would only make the situation worse, she sent back what she hoped came off as a casual inquiry as to what was bothering her friend. She hoped the casual tone was appropriate—god forbid Julie be laying in a ditch somewhere.

She turned the heat on full blast before backing out of her driveway, driving in the direction of Julie and Jeremy’s shared apartment.
