Figure 67 Climens 2001 was at least double the price of the other premier cru Sauternes in worldwide retail markets as of 2007.[338]

The effect on the market was instantaneous and dramatic. Climens 2001 immediately became a scarcity item, and its price differential over the others increased to 200-300% worldwide (Figure 67). (Climens reached about 50% of the price of Yquem, which the Wine Advocate did not rate in this vintage.) But the effect did not carry over to subsequent vintages. After a spike in the price of the 2005 vintage, Climens returned to its usual position in the marketplace, ahead of Rieussec and Suduiraut, but not dramatically so.

Château Montrose has run neck and neck with Cos d’Estournel, the other second growth in St. Estèphe, for the best part of a century. During the 1980s, Cos d’Estournel, which adopted a more modern style in contrast to Montrose’s more traditional style, began to pull somewhat ahead, becoming a clear member of the super-seconds in the 1990s. (The super-seconds are a group of châteaux that price just below the first growths.) Since 1995, Cos has led Montrose in release price (Figure 68). In these vintages, Parker has usually rated Cos d’Estournel ahead of Montrose; although this was reversed in the vintages of 2000 and 2003, in neither case did it alter the lead of Cos d’Estournel in the release prices.
