Leo, if you’re going to create a half-decent website, you need a half-decent desk to work from. I hope you like it.

I scoffed in disbelief, the tote bags falling from my arms. ‘What?!’ I had no idea that Ryan was an artist in upcycling, but recognising his handywork and his trademark RM signature in one of the painted moons. I was grinning from ear to ear. I loved it.

Chapter 19

Leo: You should find that it’s easier to be yourself in a partnership . . . there’s a full Moon in Aries.

October seemed to fly by. Tina and Paige came over to the flat the first Saturday of the month, both prepared to see my stunning new home in a mews, only to be greeted with bin bags full of rubbish in the hallway and two floor cushions in the living room that cast dust in the air when you sat on them.

It was Paige who suggested we go out for lunch rather than order in, and Tina was the first to grab her coat without even the briefest of arguments. I knew then how badly they thought of the flat, but I didn’t realise how much it would hurt.

Ryan and I had been working really hard to clear the place of the hoarder’s mess. He had already taken five van loads of rubbish down to the tip and the floor was clear of all clutter, except some boxes of items for Clare and a few remaining bin bags from clearing the bathroom. Clare’s grandmother had never thrown away a bottle of Pantene in her life. The bathroom was practically a homage to the brand.

After Tina and Paige’s somewhat disappointing visit, I decided to keep myself to myself for a little bit.

I hardly saw anyone, except Ryan and the girls at the astrology class, as I only left the flat to get food, to go to class or to do a charity shop run. It felt as if my leg hair was getting long enough to plait because I didn’t feel the need to shave anymore. And I was sleeping for hours on end on my surprisingly comfortable mattress.

With Ryan’s help I managed to clear out the dumping ground that was the bedroom and make myself a proper bed from a cheap bamboo frame from Amazon.

The living room was becoming more spacious by the day. While I still had no sofa, or any kind of seating, beyond a cheap office chair at my desk, it still felt cosy to me. The little touches of gold from the candlesticks and some old frames I’d found on a vintage stall in Brick Lane made me feel decadent among my cheap belongings. The kitchen, however, was revealing itself as more of a time warp each and every day, as the yellow cabinets cried out for a paint job and Ryan spent his days on his knees tightening up screws in shelves or freaking out whenever he spotted a cobweb.

We split the days he came
