âMore than anything you guard, protect your mind, for life flows from itâ (Proverbs 4:23).
In this current age of social media, our âfriendsâ are not just the people we see face to face. We have to be careful about our interactions on social media as well. Itâs important to be mindful of who you follow on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
Letâs go ahead and admit we spend way too much time on these sites. I like to justify it sometimes by thinking about how previous generations of women may have spent the same amount of time watching television or flipping through magazines. Weâve just changed what kind of media we consume. The point is, our brains are filled with whatever we see throughout our day.
Are you reading mostly political posts that breed constant negativity? Are you looking at pictures of Photoshopped women or seemingly perfect celebrities? Or are you following Christian writers and speakers and getting a continual dose of scripture and biblical encouragement? For me, my Twitter feed is my main source of content. My Facebook feed is mostly friends and family posting baby pictures and funny cat memes. But Twitter is where Iâve gone for news and entertainment for quite a few years now.
About a year ago, I realized that every time I finished reading my Twitter feed, I felt low. I had somehow filled my feed with politics and celebrity news, none of which was doing anything to teach me to be more like Christ or remind me of the hope found in Jesus. I swore off Twitter for a little while but then discovered how many inspirational Christians are on there! I unfollowed the majority of the accounts that filled my feed with negativity and replaced them with Beth Moore, Priscilla Shirer, The Christian Post, Faithwire, and others in that genre.
When I hop on Twitter during breakfast each morning, Iâm greeted by uplifting scripture, biblical commentary, and great reminders about how believers should be living their lives. I know some people think we should give up social media altogether, but I think it can do a lot of good if itâs used correctly. If your time on social media is bringing you down instead of lifting you up, go clean up that follow list and plug in some truth-tellers who can encourage you as a sister in Christ.
