Chapter Twenty
The next morning, Iâd snuck out early, brushing Traceâs cheek with a kiss, as I had a number of errands I wanted to take care of without company. I ran around and got all of them taken care of in no time, flying down the highway, as it hadnât gotten crowded yet.
Suddenly, a shot rang out.
I checked my rearview and side mirrors to confirm that Iâd heard correctly. I saw an SUV and a motorcycle rapidly approaching. Wondering if they had a score to settle with one another, I merged into the middle lane and hit the gas.
Another round of gunfire, this coming from the man on the motorcycle. My heart pounded furiously as bullets peppered the back of my Lexus. The SUV rammed my bumper, and I came close to running off the road.
I grabbed my Ruger out of my purse just as I was rammed again, this time coming inches from careening up over the sidewalk.
There was a brief pause in gunfire; thankfully, the shooter wasnât good at hitting his target. He zipped closer and took another shot, and my windshield turned into a spiderweb of cracks.
I powered down the driverâs window and took a shot at the motorcycle. He dropped his gun and grabbed his arm. The bike wheeled around, tires screeching, and he sped off. The SUV came up alongside me, clipping my front bumper before roaring off.
I sucked in a deep breath. Stupid as it was, I gunned the engine and went after the SUV, as I had no clue who wanted to run me off the road and hoped to find out. The driver mustâve seen me coming, as they blew through a red light in a blare of horns. Thankfully, there were no collisions.
I pulled onto a side street, grabbed my phone, and tucked my Ruger into the back of my pants as I got out. I circled the car, realizing that several of the shots had hit the passenger side. I wasnât aware of anyone except the motorcycleâwhich was on the driverâs side the whole timeâfiring and hadnât seen the SUVâs window go down. Was there a third vehicle I missed? I called Lucas.
âIâm not done being irked off at you,â he said when he answered. âDo you know that the kids went on and on and on about what fun you are?â
âTwo vehicles just chased me down and opened fire on me.â
âWhere did this happen?â
I told him the names of the streets where I was sitting. âThe vehicles were a black BMW motorcycle and a black Escalade. Both looked new.â
âDonât hang up. Iâm calling Morgan.â
I heard Lucas make the call and relay everything to the detective.
Before he returned to the line, he yelled to Wolf, âDid you get all that?â The answer mustâve been yes, as he didnât repeat anything. âIâll send out a tow truck and a loaner.â
âIâm pretty sure I didnât show as much appreciation as I shouldâve when you leaned on me to upgrade to armored.â The
