Day Four

Morning

Fayth woke up thinking her head was going to explode. A glass of water and a packet of ibuprofen were sitting on the bedside table. Thank god for Hollie being so organised.

After taking the painkillers, she checked the time on her phone: 6am. She and Hollie had only wandered in a few hours earlier, and the sleep deprivation was kicking in. She rolled over, picturing Trinity’s smug face as she sashayed out of the club.

*

Fayth’s phone sprung to life an hour later. When she realised it was Brooke, she reluctantly answered. ‘Yes?’

‘Jessica just showed me pictures of you and Liam York together. Dancing. And talking. And dancing some more. Apparently you’re the reason he broke up with Trinity.’

‘Your point?’

Hollie waved her arm in the air. She wanted to know who was responsible for their early morning wake-up call. Brooke mouthed Fayth, sitting up and putting her phone on speaker.

‘Is it true?’ asked Brooke.

‘Which part?’ said Fayth.

‘All of it!’ said Brooke.

Fayth squeezed her eyes shut, then reopened them. ‘Liam and I are just friends.’

‘Oh my god! Are you kidding me? Do you know what this means?’ said Brooke.

‘Should I?’

‘You can totally get me into all the cool parties!’ squealed Brooke.

Fayth snorted. ‘Yeah. Because they’re going to have all the cool parties within travelling distance of the pub.’

Was that really all Brooke cared about?

Hollie, a floating head peeking out of a duvet, laughed.

‘Ugh, you’re such a killjoy,’ said Brooke.

‘Liam and I are just friends, and he’s just a guy,’ said Fayth.

‘Next thing I know you’re going to start quoting Notting Hill to me. Please. We both know why him being Liam York makes a difference,’ said Brooke.

‘You’re making a big deal out of nothing. So he’s on TV a lot,’ said Fayth.

‘And in cinemas. And magazines. And all over the internet. And there was a poster of him on your wall until you got married,’ said Brooke. Patrick had made her take it down because he was jealous of it. Ironic.

‘I repeat: so?’

‘So he’s not just any guy. Everyone knows who he is. That puts extra pressure on him, and by association, you,’ said Brooke.

‘She’s right,’ agreed Hollie, taking her phone from its spot on the bedside table and flicking through it.

‘No, it doesn’t, because there’s nothing going on and therefore no extra pressure,’ said Fayth.

‘Are you serious? He’s Liam York. Why would you not be all over him?’ said Brooke.

‘Because, until last night, he was taken,’ Fayth reminded her.

‘So now that he’s single…’

‘Oh my god, Brooke!’

‘What? It already looks like something’s going on between you two anyway,’ said Brooke.

‘They’re just photos. They don’t tell the whole story,’ said Fayth.

Why was Brooke making such a big deal out of it?

‘Incriminating photos,’ corrected Brooke.

Hollie nodded in agreement. She held out her phone for Fayth to see, but she was too far away.

‘So what is going on with you two? You can tell your baby sister!’

‘I just did,’ said Fayth.

‘You’re lying to me!’

‘How would you know? You’re not here. You’ve no idea what’s going on.
