Age of Students

If you take some time to study the technical manuals of standardized tests, you will notice that test reliability estimates are lower for tests at the kindergarten and first and second grade level than for tests designed for students in grades three and above. This is because students at these ages are very likely to be developmentally in different places, and a norm-referenced test may not be able to adequately capture achievement. Katz (1997) reported that young children are poor test takers because they can be confused by the testing process. They may have difficulty answering a question that they think the examiner must know the answer to.

Even the most child-friendly version of a standardized test will not be reliable and valid for every student. For this reason, it is important not to overinterpret standardized test scores and to use them instead in conjunction with other assessments to evaluate student progress. This is especially important for young children taking their first standardized test. Unfortunately, it is especially difficult to convince parents that they must not overinterpret this first piece of official information! It is your job to try.
