Jesus isn’t talking about love as an emotion. He doesn’t expect us to have warm, fuzzy feelings about our enemies. He’s talking about love as a decision of the will. In your emotions, you may feel nothing but hurt or rage toward your enemy. But in your will and your intentions, you can choose to do good toward your enemy and pray for your enemy. In time, positive feelings may follow your deliberate actions of love.

This kind of deliberate love is inclusive and it loves all people the same. It enables us to love those we’ve never met and even those who drive us crazy with their disagreeable behavior. Add this kind of committed love to your romantic relationship and it will enable you to love that person as long as you live. Add this kind of love to your family relationships and it will get you through all the rough patches and hard times.

This kind of love is the ultimate in unselfishness. We can’t control our feelings, but we can always control our choices. Feelings may change, but a commitment to love is as durable as you choose to make it. That’s why the apostle Paul, in his famous New Testament “Love Chapter,” said:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails… . And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love (1 Cor. 13:4-8,13).
