The makeshift security room’s ancient fax machine spits out a low-quality copy of Wilbur Bailey’s IRS wanted poster, and one of the Honduran officers grabs it and hands it to the captain.

“Sólo en América,” the captain mumbles when he sees the reward.

Ten minutes earlier, at Ray’s request, the captain had ordered a check of the passengers and crew to see if any were missing phones. Of the five people who couldn’t locate their cells, Ray zeroes in on the flight attendant, Donna, and a ping triangulation confirms his hunch.

With a cell crooked in his shoulder to his ear, Ray jots the phone’s pinging coordinates on his palm as they come in from the cell’s surveillance engineer, and he joins the captain and others around a table, a large map spread out before them.

The captain plants his index finger on a dot in the northeast corner of Honduras near its border with Guatemala. “This is us,” he says to Ray.

“Odds are he’s somewhere in here,” Ray says and draws a circle around the dot. “Her phone pinged twice.” He glances at his palm. “First here, twenty minutes ago.” He draws another circle. “And here, ten minutes later.” He draws a third and marks an X over the spot where the three circles overlap. “Then it went silent.”

“Because it’s underwater,” the captain says, and after a final gut check, he offers Ray a 9 mm and a pair of cuffs, their eyes conveying solidarity.

Ray takes both and grabs his badge, passport, and wallet as they file out. Two seconds later he pops back in, grabs his baggies of beans, and darts back out.
